Other Helpful Guides
SPECIFIC FLORAL CARE SECRETS
Hydrangeas
- Revive tired blooms by submerging entire flower and stem in cool water for 30 minutes
- Cut upwards from the bottom of woody stems (2-3cm up) to help them drink more
- Mist flower heads daily - they drink through their petals too!
Cut Orchids
- Phalaenopsis stems can drink through their flowers!
- If looking tired, submerge entire stem and blooms for at least an hour
- Remove spent blooms to keep arrangement fresh
Tulips
- The only flowers that continue growing after being cut - allow space in vase for stems to stretch
- Will bend & grow toward light - rotate vase daily for even growth
Natives
- Banksias, proteas and natives with woody stems benefit from being cut up the stem, similar to hydrangea
- Keep water level high - natives are thirsty creatures!!
- Remove any gumnuts/heavy seeds that fall below the water line
Pro Tips
- Most flowers prefer cool water - it helps them last longer
- Always start with a clean vase
- Remove any foliage sitting below the waterline
CARING FOR ORCHID PLANTS
Phalaenopsis Orchids
- Keep indoors with bright, indirect light
- Only water when potting mix is completely dry (typically every 10-14 days)
- A west-facing windowsill is perfect
Cymbidium Orchids
- Happy outdoors with filtered light
- Water sparingly in winter, more frequently in summer
- Feed with orchid fertiliser once yearly
INDOOR PLANT CARE
Indoor plants thrive with indirect light. The most common issue is overwatering - here's the best method to follow:
- Insert your finger into the soil (about 5cm deep)
- Only water if it feels completely dry
- When in doubt, wait another day
Remember: most indoor plants die from too much water, not too little
TERRARIUM TIPS
- Place in bright, indirect light (avoid direct sun which can cook your plants)
- Always keep glass lid ON to maintain humidity
- Water sparingly - check for condensation inside the glass - if it is present, do not water.
- As a rough guide, once every 6-12 months is sufficient
- Water by using a spray bottle, never pour water in directly
- Trim overgrown plants and remove dead leaves to keep it looking fresh
